This is Lame.

bully2.jpgBummer. CNN reports that last week a 5th grader in Pennsylvania with severe peanut allergies was sitting at his peanut-free lunch table when a bully came up and teased him by waving a granola bar in front of his face. Not only was the poor little guy being mocked but the bully kid was putting him in serious danger--it could have touched him and God knows what would have happened!

Now the extra hard bummer. A study published in the Annals of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology, found that 35 percent of children over age 5 with food allergies have are getting bullied, teased or harassed because of the food they have to eat. Not only do these kids have to worry about policing their own allergies and stressing out about everything they put in their mouths, they have to deal with this too? Kids can be cruel, man.

I finally understand the tears that some parents shed when they come into the bakery as they watch their kids pick out anything that they like, it's the first time they've ever had a choice. For that moment they are not weird and nobody is thinking about food allergies. They can finally be a kid who shoves cookies and donuts in their mouths and eats just the frosting off the cupcake. I see this daily and know I'm a really lucky girl. What a cool day job.

Employee (Sort of) Spotlight: Hamish Robertson

Hamish.jpgMeet Hamish Robertson everyone! He's the Head of Graphic Design here at BabyCakes. This means you've admired his work while you browsed our website, drooled over the menus, and educated yourself with our nutritional pamphlets. Sure, he's not technically an employee since he refuses to wear the dress and he has a day job as Online Design Editor at Vanity Fair as well as curator of Afterzine but he's still ours too!

Unplggd just did this cool gadgety piece on him that truthfully makes me want to go out and buy stuff. See his Tech Top Ten here. He's cool.

Mallory Keaton's Outfits

malory.jpgIf you grew up in the 80's like I did--you were totally jealous or absolutely in love with Mallory Keaton from Family Ties. I was both. Some genius (I'm not being sarcastic here) put an archive of her looks on this tumblr here. Enjoy.

Vegetable Butcher

vegetable butcher.jpg

I became a big fan of Mario Batali's restaurant empire back when I waitressed at his trattoria, Lupa, in 2004. The vegetable offerings at his restaurants were so abundant, adventurous and satisfying it was easy for diners to dodge dairy, wheat and meat without feeling totally ripped off or bummed.

Last week I finally made it down to Eataly--his new gourmet Italian grocery store where you can shop for groceries or stop for a bite. I wouldn't say I was surprised to find a restaurant inside that featured vegetables and only vegetables, but I was really moved! Let's be honest, they could have thrown a meatball shop in there or something more crowd please-y but they took what many would see as a risk and the energy around it (here comes the hippy!) was glowy happiness and beauty. This got me tremendously stoked.

But the love doesn't even stop there. A vegetable butcher is on site in the market to prep your vegetables before you buy them. Don't know how to shave that fennel? Me neither! Don't want to trim that broccoli rabe? Not a problem! Too lazy-I-mean-busy to peel those baby carrots? Leave them with the butcher while you shop and she'll take care of it for you. This is my kind of place.

Eataly is on 23rd street and 5th ave. Go there on your day off and cruise around--even if it's just to eat a few free samples and plan your next shopping trip. You'll most likely see me there.

If you've been to either our LA or NY bakery, you may have noticed that much of the BabyCakes experience has to do with our most excellent staff. For real, I adore our bakers, office and counter staff--they inspire me on a daily basis. Many of you may recognize that lady girl in the photo, Lizz Hickey, from our NY shop. Lizz makes really cool comics you can see here on her blog and I'm really proud that she's featured on Vice right now which you can check out here. Get it Lizz!!

West Hollywood, Anyone?

dantanas.jpegIt's no secret that I have big plans for expanding BabyCakes NYC to other cities in the upcoming years (Hi San Francisco! Hi Austin! Well hello there, Paris!) but first things first. We are setting our sights on West Hollywood to kick things off. Since so many of you were extraordinarily helpful with finding us a Farmer's Market home (we'll be at the Malibu Farmers Market within a month!) I figured I'd go back to our core customer base and ask you this: Have you seen a little storefront in West Hollywood or Boys Town that is just waiting to hold a BabyCakes? We're looking for something small and affordable to rest our donuts, cakes and cookies!

Downtowners, don't fret! We love it there so much--we're not leaving you! And to everyone in Venice, Santa Monica, the Upper East Side and beyond please hold tight. I promise we'll get to you as quickly as we can manage.

Del Posto's BabyCakes Challenge

Brooks Headley is Del Posto's pastry chef in that video up there (yes, the restaurant is one of Mario Batali's greatest hits). My Boyfriend-I-Mean-Husband, Chris, became friends with Brooks because Chris is an editor guy at some rowdy magazine for 20-somethings that Brooks (formerly the drummer for Born Against) was featured in. Wow, that was a long sentence. I,however, am a baker and forged a friendship with Brooks because of his pastry background and more importantly because he said this revolutionary thing about vegetarian cooking and vegan pastry in Vice Magazine [please note there is some colorful language ahead--it's but one part of what makes Brooks so excellent, in my humble opinion!]:

"There are a lot of chefs that are anti-vegetarian. I am 1,000% pro-vegetarian. Chefs that are anti-veg are f*****g idiots. They're crybabies with a f*****g warped sense of creativity. Your walk-in is filled with beautiful fruits and vegetables. J****s C****t, make it work, dude. I'm totally stoked to send out my vegan desserts. It's not a chore."

See, that's what I'm talking about!!! This is the attitude that a lot of chefs could stand to adopt. Cooking vegetarian shouldn't be seen as a thorn in their side but an opportunity to celebrate what's left in the kitchen once you take the meat out. Brooke takes it one step further with vegan guests and creates massive works of art with his pastry that make me slightly embarrassed for how simple mine are. Only slightly, though.

Brooks emailed me yesterday to tell me he's giving his externs a challenge. He's stocked his kitchen with coconut oil, xanthan gum, gluten-free flour and the BabyCakes cookbook and told them to, "make it happen". I don't know about you but I want a boss like that.

Doesn't the book look adorable on the pass in their kitchen?
