As much as David Chang and Anthony Bourdain hate them, cupcakes shops around NY are opening at a ferocious rate--this article proves it.. Inc Magazine took this as a opportunity to explore what is really needed to create a strong business plan for the hopeful bakery entrepreneurs out there. You might find it helpful if you or someone you love is thinking about taking that plunge... I give a few things of advice here.
Just a heads up before you post your questions, ok? As much as I'd love to give more advice I can't answer any business questions on the blog--you'll have to wait for my "How to Make a BabyCakes" book!
Sometimes I meet people that live so full-out it makes my heart expand and then tears start coming out of my eyes. Me and my sisters are electrified by this girl and we're constantly watching for her updates. Click here to explore the world of Painty Hands. Swoooooon.
During tonight's Downtown LA Art Walk, BabyCakes will be hosting its first ever Cake Walk! Stop by the bakery for games at 7pm, 8pm and 9pm. You can win cupcakes in a fun, musical chairs-esque way!

We're always getting visitors at the bakery who want insider tips on where they should eat/shop in NY for gluten-free, vegan or both. I always make sure to tell them to start the day with a juice by Melvin over at Lifethyme Market on 6th Ave and then go browse the groceries at our favorite secret vegan shop, May Wah, at 213 Hester (they have countless vegan products. Absolutely bonkers!) or to grab lunch at Candle 79 for their many mouth-watering, celiac-friendly menu options and, if their budget allows, dinner at Del Posto for the finest fine-dining experience under the care of chef Mark Ladner and pastry chef Brooks Headley (just make sure to call ahead and mention your food limitations).
Now I want to hear from you. What are you're favorite secret spots(hey! I told you ours)? Do you know of any under-the-radar types of places you want to share. Don't be shy. We're all friends here!
I've opened up the blog to address concerns and questions about the BabyCakes Cookbook (What do you mean you don't have it!!! Get it here!)before and I thought it was a great success! Over the past year, we've tallied up the most frequently asked questions and that list plus helpful answers now lives on our website under the tab "Cookbook". If your question isn't answered there, you can twitter us your questions Monday-Friday from 10am-5pm EST, OR! email the bakery at cookbook@babycakesnyc.com. EZ!!! And for the sake of getting a speedy response to you and maintaining order, don't leave a question in the comment section below, k? No questions in the comment section? Thank youuuuuu!!
Hey! I just want to let you all know that I've made these things called The Workout Cookie. Warning: this is not for the Ding-Dong, or Twinkie crowd. I created it to fill the low-fat high-fiber mega, mega, mega-healthy breakfast void some customers were feeling. It's the kind of thing you grab to eat on the subway on your way to work, or to munch after a bike ride. It's high-fiber, sweet and crunchy like a muffin but without all the extra fat and stuff. Now, if you know me at all you probably think I've lost my mind because I've made something low-fat. But wait. Let me explain.
Since the dawn of BabyCakes NYC, I have stood firm in my clogs against baking lowfat food. Most lowfat products are terrible, and frankly nowhere near healthy. And lowfat sounded so 80's Jane Fonda Workout style. I've always preached that fat is good for you, especially the kind I bake with and that your body needs it to be able digest fat,. I know it sounds backward but it's true. I've softened in my years, I suppose, and recently became open to the challenge to make something lowfat for those who cringe at the sight of oil. So here we are.
Now, about the cookie, right? It's made with coconut sugar (low glycemic!) gluten-free oat flour and oats, flax meal, fresh banana, and blueberries, pureed pear, and very minimal oil (they're about 3g of fat). The girls at the bakery really like them, and they are all pizza and french fry types so I think it's a good sign!
We're twittering when we have them so if you're in the neighborhood and curious, stop by!
Bye!
Hey LA! I just want to let you know that we deliver alllllll over LA now. Yes, it's true. You can just pick up the phone and get fresher than fresh BabyCakes driven straight to your doorstep. Our delivery service has different zones and charge accordingly but it's reasonable if you can swing it. Just call the bakery at 213.623.5555 and we'll take it from there.
Toodles!
I'm trying to find a way to act awesome and as if it's NO BIG DEAL, but that would be totally wrong of me. Actually, I'M TOTALLY LOSING IT because BabyCakes NYC just scored the coveted Best of New York award from New York Magazine for our doughnuts!!!
Ok, for those of you who don't live in NY or don't read New York Magazine, or live in Kankakee, Illinois and therefore do not know about this list; let me explain. Every year the persnickety food editors compile a list of the best of everything to eat in NY. We made the list a few months after opening BabyCakes NYC, for Best Cupcakes in NY (thanks!) and now we've been crowned Best Vegan Treat in NY for our doughnuts. Is this life of mine really real??? What's next?!?! Thank you, New York Magazine. I will continue to refresh my Grubstreet button every 15 minutes for up-to-the-minute news in the food world. Love!!!![]()
This new cookbook I'm working on is now making me candy crazy. Don't get it twisted: I still have the fever for the donuts. But! I'm branching out to candy now too. These lil guys are just like Mounds and available in-store on special days (follow us on twitter to find out when) or you can special order them!
Also on my to-do list is peppermint patties, caramel chews, and rocky road! What's on your wish list? Hit me while I'm in the inspiration tunnel. I'm serious guys. I have the attention span of a gold fish these days!
You know I'm working on my next cookbook, BabyCakes Covers the Classics, right? Of course you do!
Anyhow, I'm including a few savory recipes in this one because that's what many of you have been clawing at me for (maybe a little hyperbolic to say, but I'm fun like that). So with a little bit of grumbling and a lot of hair pulling, I've tested and retested my way to the holy goldmine of crepedom. I locked myself in my apartment all day to focus on the crepe recipe and after many tries it finally came together! All I did was put in a little bit (BLEEEP) and added extra (BLEEP) and then accidentally (BLEEPED) which made the most delicious, delicate, buttery rich gluten-free, vegan, soy-free savory cheese crepes I've had since my last crepe in '97. Sorry about the bleeps, you're just going to have to wait for the cookbook!
In the meantime, enjoy the photos! Next quest: The Pizzette! Oh, dear. I've got work to do...
Oh! You must be wondering what our new LA hours are, right? It took quite a few meditation sessions on the kitchen floor before I was clear: LA's BabyCakes NYC is a party bakery. We like to party with cookies and tea till super late at night and we know you do too. So without any ado, here's our official hours for LA and I hope you're stoked!
Ok, then. Here it is:
MONDAY: 12-6 or until we sell out. This is otherwise known as Day-Old Mondays--everything's leftover from Sunday, therefore 1/2 OFF!!!!!
TUESDAY: 10AM-10PM
WEDNESDAY: 10AM-10PM
THURSDAY: 10AM-MIDNIGHT
FRIDAY: 10AM-MIDNIGHT
SATURDAY:10AM-MIDNIGHT
SUNDAY: 10AM-6PM
I'm staying open very late because if you're anything like me, a night on the town looks more like a donut and coffee than a shot and a beer (perhaps I'm getting old?). Besides, BabyCakes NYC is the clubbing-est bakery ever! Who wouldn't want to spend a Saturday night chilling there?
See you soon, ok?
